Notes for users of versions before 0.9.4

From version 0.9.4 on, HelpSetMaker changes the internal representation of the project data. The main file is now XML-based, opposed to the old, properties-based format.

For each old project, a conversion has to be done. HelpSetMaker does this automatically.

Conversion query

The dialog which opens after the attempt to load a not yet converted project explains the situation and asks if it should start the conversion.

Warning

The dialog asks if a backup of the project has been made. While the conversion has been tested and has been performed successfully on a number of projects already, it could be that there are some errors left. Be sure that you have a backup of your project!

After starting the conversion process, a dialog informs about the progress and any problems.

Conversion information dialog.

Conversion is a two-stage process:

  1. The project is loaded from its old, properties-based configuration file and immediately saved into the new, XML-based configuration file.

  2. The XML configuration is read in again and compared against the result of the first reading. Both must be identical. If not, the conversion seems to have failed. In this case, an error is raised and the project is not touched any more.

After a successful conversion, the old configuration file is deleted. This is to prevent any confusion about the current state of the project. This means, however, that noone will be able to load this project any more with a HelpSetMaker version before 0.9.4.

Project conversion is a mandatory step in upgrading to HelpSetMaker 0.9.4. An unconverted project is not editable with HelpSetMaker 0.9.4 or later.

Conversion is mandatory

Warning

Be sure that you have a backup of your project before you start the conversion!
