You can prevent the STML system from identifying a special mark by prepending it with a backslash, “\”. If you want to print out the backslash itself, write it double, “\\”.
You get **bold text** in your paragraph by surrounding the \**bold text\** with double asterisks. If you want to print a double asterisk “\**” itself, prepend it with a backslash, “\\”.

If you put normal HTML tags into your document, they will be printed “as is” into the output documents. I.e. as HelpSetMaker knows about the needs of escaping triangular brackets etc., you will read your HTML tags plain in the output text. This is the only sensible way of handling things, as HelpSetMaker is to be independant of the output format and supports multiple different formats.
